Rhino Conservation Project
This rhino conservation project is both life-changing and life-saving. Rhinos are still targeted and poached for their horn, for various reasons, from traditional Chinese medicinal beliefs, aphrodisiacs, and even as status symbols, and as a result one of the most expensive commodities on the black market worldwide.
These mythical beliefs are driving one of Africa’s most iconic species to extinction. Rhino protection consists of a large toolbox of measures taken to protect them: from anti-poaching units, aerial surveillance, detection- and tracking dogs, intelligence gathering, tourism, and dehorning, to name a few.
Over the last 10 years, dehorning has contributed massively as a deterrent to poachers, making the reward not big enough to poach in reserves that follow this strategy. This non-harmful procedure has proven to have no impact on rhinos, as their calving intervals remained unchanged, social behaviour hasn’t changed and it has given reserve management more time to improve tactics. While dehorning has a positive impact on rhino conservation, one has to remember, it is merely a preventative procedure and not the silver bullet to stop poaching.
